LetCleanWatersFlow Sports Initiative 2010-2013 Date Published: November 2009
With the threat of water crisis, continuing to affect the lives of people around the world, the leading sports leagues, associations and teams join LetCleanWatersFlow Sports Initiative to to educate
athletes, coaches, and fans about critical water issues including the
necessity for clean and safe water, and it's far reaching health,
environmental, and economic impact.
Considered by many as having a positive influence among the youth around the world, each individual sports organization can pursue a multitude of water initiatives to raise awareness and much needed funds, and to remain positive global citizens.
The LetCleanWatersFlow sports initiative is being implemented by each of the sports organizations locally in their geographic location.
The purpose of this sports initiative is to create healthy and pleasant environment for the athletes and their families, coaches and fans, and communities, while exerting a positive influence on stewardship at the glocal - global and local - scale. The awareness and education will allow individuals to make sound decisions, while facilitating the creation of water conscious individuals in the process.
Health of individuals and our environment and water stewardship are at the core of this initiative, with the leading H2OAlliance water experts from around the world providing the guidance required to make positive choices. The program will allow individuals, teams, and leagues to continue to make choices that improve individual's health and sports performance, while improving water efficiency by reducing waste, and increasing the overall sustainability of day-to-day activities.
The positive impact of this initiative relates back to the communities' goals of achieving health and sustainable water and resource management benefits, and a reduction of water footprint. Each participating sports organization will be asked to develop a water policy, which includes the following core requirements:
- Access to clean and safe drinking water in sports facilities;
- Engage staff at all levels of operations to use less water, materials, and energy - when possible;
- Be able to educate staff, vendors, sponsors, fans, athletes and their families.
Further to this development, each sports organization will relate the overall water policy to all levels of team operation, inclusive of items such as procurement, sponsorship contract requirements, team communications, staff involvement at all levels, and the development of a reporting structure through water sustainability reports, which is expected to begin in 2010.
Sports organizations can utilize these policy requirements as a template for developing efficient water policies. These standards can be developed in collaboration with H2OAlliance experts.
Collaboration between sports organizations and water experts can influence operational aspects such as reduction of use of water, materials, and energy. The health, economic, and environmental benefits that come from these efforts will likely have a lasting influence on the sports community, especially younger generation athletes and their fans.
Conclusion
The LetCleanWatersFlow Sports Initiative being implemented by the sports organizations will continue to have a positive impact on communities, and the fans, sponsors, and athletes themselves and their families. If this influence will motivate others to make positive improvements at the local level, regional and national initiatives to improve: access to clean and safe drinking water; water-efficiency; and address the issues related to environment may become more manageable.
By incorporating new technologies, implementing efficient operational processes, and becoming more aware of water issues and concerns, the sports organizations are facilitating other individuals and organizations to take responsibility for water stewardship – thus creating an opportunity for expansion into the sports community, industry, and for business community.
